Matthew Galea won Malta’s first ever medal at an EYOF event, in the boy’s 400m race. The young athlete was only 0.2 seconds behind silver medallist Fabian Vidal from Spain. Galea hopes his achievement can inspire other young Maltese athletes. His impressive victory earned him the bronze medal and will sure be etched in the memories of those present.
The 2022 Summer European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) held in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia, saw the participation of over 2200 young athletes, competing across ten sports disciplines. Representing 48 nations, the event showcased the talents of budding athletes aged 14 to 18. Among the notable occurrences, this EYOF marked an emphasis on sustainability, integrating eco-friendly practices throughout the event. It aimed to minimise environmental impact by utilising renewable energy sources, promoting recycling, and implementing eco-conscious transportation. Additionally, the 2022 EYOF emphasised the significance of sport in promoting unity, diversity, and friendship among the participating nations.
